Midseason Hoops Update

The OU men’s and women’s basketball teams have reached the midpoint of their respective seasons and here’s an update on how the teams are progressing.

After graduating their top six players from last year’s squad head coach Ron Sattele has been feverishly working as an alchemist trying to put together the best lineup amongst a bevy of new players. In all, the '09-'10 squad features 11 new players trying to get acclimated to coach Sattele’s system, and the team has experienced some expected growing pains in the process. At press time, the women’s team had compiled a 7-7 overall record including a 2-3 mark in SCAC play. The team has battled through injuries to several key players but has been lifted by the poised play of freshmen Sarah Jones, Riley Cerone and Sarah Giles.

The men’s team began the '09-'10 campaign with two starters being saddled with injuries and have battled its way to an 8-5 overall record that includes the Petrels being 3-2 in SCAC play. Recently, the men had a six-game winning streak snapped as they lost a tough overtime matchup with Centre College in Danville, KY, by the score of 59-58. The team has been led by the outstanding play of preseason All-America candidate Todd Ward who is currently 10th in the SCAC in points per game with 14.5 and first in the SCAC in rebounds per game at 10.5. Senior David Allison returned from injury in December to pilot the team from the point guard position and junior forward Alex Richey has put together an excellent season to date.
